Human Resources

Human resources is all about helping your business succeed by managing employees and inspiring them to meet their full potential.

Human resources is an integral part of any business, and will set you up for organizational success.

How to hire your first employee

When hiring your first employee, and all the ones that follow, you’ll want to ensure that you have an organization structure built out so you know exactly what roles and responsibilities you need filled.

It’s important to define each position including job title, reporting relationship, responsibilities, job requirements (education level or training), and pay scale. Learn more about setting up a pay scale.

Once you’ve fleshed out the job description and specific details it’s time to hire your first employee. Create a job listing and post on job boards and LinkedIn.

You should also have an interviewing plan in place for when you start conducting interviews. Know what you’re looking for and base your questions around finding that fit.

Creating a training program

After you’ve hired a new employee, the next step is to make sure they are sufficiently trained. Having a training program in place makes the process smooth, and eliminates any discrepancies between employees.

When you creating an employee training and development program you should:

  • Clearly outline the goals of the program
  • Adopt a practical and problem-centered approach based on real examples
  • Make sure that new material is connected to employees’ past learning and work experience
  • Ensure the employees are participating in hands-on activities during the learning process
  • Create a learning environment that is informal, safe and supportive

When hiring employees and building out an employee training program there are many questions that you should be answering along the way. Here are a few of the most common questions to consider:

  • What is your overall goal?
  • What does the employee need to learn?
  • What type of training is necessary?
  • What physical facilities will you need?
  • How long will the training program be?
  • Who will operate the training program?
  • What costs will be associated with the program?
  • What checks or controls will you use?
  • How will the program be publicized?
